HISTORY
Ethnically, Corfu was always Greek, but politically it became part of Greece in 1864. Before this date, for many centuries, the island had many different rulers – Romans, Franks, Venetians, French and British. Each ruler left its legacy of buildings and culture, so that today you can see Roman villas, Frankish castles, Venetian mansions and fortresses, French arcades and British palaces.
